A blog post describing how different creative media sectors work together to produce products
The various roles within the creative media sector are often interlinked. To this end this post with identify three areas where this collaborative approach can easily be identified.
Eternal Hunting Grounds - Elin Grimstad (2016)
This 2016 film from Artist/Director Elin Grimstad is a great example of the collaboration between visual artists and digitally based manipulation. It was initially based on cut up style hand animation produced on glass plates and then computer scanned and further animated by the twin companies Nukufilm OÜ (Estonia), Medieoperatorene (Norway). Mixing both analogue art and digital manipulation this short was a great success winning among others the Golden Dove for Best Animated Short at the Leipzig film festival.
From commission to the finished film all of the involved (visual artist, digital manipulation, the film companies themselves) worked in harmony from the writing of the work onwards.
Another good example of the collaboration between Film, Computer Animation and music is Disneys 1982 film Tron. Combining analogue film and digitally manipulated film this classic sci-fi was one of the earliest examples of the use of digital manipulation. The very futuristic sound track by Wendy Carlos is yet another example of the collaborative nature of the project. This film is a masterpiece example of the way various different media disciplines can collaborate from conception to final release with the analog film team working on 65mm film which was then combined with the digitally manipulated 35mm film (which was subsequently scanned and enlarged to 65mm) while at all times Wendy Carlos was at work on the score to provided rushes from the film teams.
The 1999 Collaboration between the electronic musician Aphex Twin and Sheffield based designers The Design Republic was released alongside Apex Twins 1999 single Windowlicker and marks a high point of design collaboration. Commissioned as additional promotional material (which initially caused issues under chart return rules) the close links and previous relationship between Aphex Twin and the Design Republic worked well from conception and commission through to the conclusion and final release of the calander.
